James joined the Mormon church on March 9, 1869, at the age of 20, while
living in Waterloo, Didbrook Parish, England. He was anxious to join
the Mormons in Utah, and left England with his brother John, John's
wife, Mary, and their son, Rufus. The Days arrived in Ogden, Utah in
August 1869, and went on by covered wagon to Fillmore.
James lived with his brother while working to pay back the church emigration
fund for the cost of his trip to Utah. His father, Richard, and mother,
Elizabeth Smith, and the other nine children of the family came to Fillmore
within the next two years.
On January 8, 1877, James married Emma Mitchell. Emma was not yet 16
years old at the time. Shortly after the marriage, James and Emma were
called to go to Deseret to help build that area. Four children were born
to them while living in Deseret, Frank, Ida, Flora, and Elmer. James
and Emma and the four children returned to Fillmore where Walter Alma
and the rest of the children were born.
In 1902 James was elected City Councilman, and then in 1906 he served
as Mayor of Fillmore.
Shortly after the family reunion picture was taken, James died in Fillmore,
Sept. 24, 1934. He is buried in the Fillmore cemetary.
