Emma Adela Mitchell came to Utah with her sister Sarah Mitchell Pratt
in 1869. Emma was just 8 years old, having been born in Sawterie, Huntingdonshire,
England, on September 6, 1861.
On January 8, 1877, Emma, age 15, married James Day. James and Emma were
called to help colonize the area of Deseret, West of Fillmore. On Sept.
1, 1878 (5 days before Emma's 17th birthday) James Franklin was born
in Deseret.
Emma was an excellent manager. She always worked rapidly and efficiently,
having her meals prepared on time, breakfast at 7:00am, dinner at 12:00
noon, supper at 6:00pm. The children knew that if they were late for
meals they might not get their share of food, since there were nine
boys, it took pounds of food each day of the year. Emma was a good
cook and served well balanced and tasty meals.
